India’s National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) reported another milestone for the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), with both transaction volume and value reaching record levels in May 2026.

According to NPCI data, UPI processed 18.68 billion transactions during the month, the highest monthly volume recorded so far. The total value of transactions touched ₹29.98 lakh crore, bringing the platform within touching distance of the ₹30 lakh crore mark for the first time.

Record Growth Across Payments Ecosystem

The latest figures underscore UPI’s growing role as the backbone of India’s digital payments infrastructure. On a daily basis, the platform handled an average of more than 602 million transactions, while daily transaction value stood at approximately ₹96,700 crore.

The growth reflects increasing adoption across peer-to-peer transfers, merchant payments, utility bill payments, subscriptions, and business transactions. UPI has become the preferred payment method for millions of consumers due to its convenience, speed, and interoperability across banks and applications.

The ecosystem is powered by leading payment platforms such as PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, and several banking applications.

Digital Infrastructure Continues to Expand

The milestone comes as India continues strengthening its digital public infrastructure through innovations including UPI Lite, UPI credit, international payment acceptance, and AI-powered payment experiences.

Recent collaborations between fintech companies, banks, and AI platforms are also opening new use cases such as conversational commerce and agentic payments, allowing users to complete purchases directly through AI assistants.

With transaction volumes continuing to grow at a rapid pace, UPI remains one of the world’s largest real-time payment networks. The latest record further highlights India’s leadership in digital payments and the increasing shift toward a cash-light economy driven by technology, financial inclusion, and smartphone penetration.
