India’s IT employee body NITES has urged the Labour Ministry to mandate work-from-home for the country’s 5.8 million IT workforce, aligning its demand with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent call for austerity measures to reduce fuel consumption and non-essential travel amid global uncertainties.
The organisation argued that encouraging remote work can significantly cut fuel usage, traffic congestion, and commuting costs while also supporting employee well-being and productivity.
Remote Work Debate Gains Fresh Momentum
NITES has reportedly asked the government to introduce a formal framework enabling flexible and remote work policies for the IT and IT-enabled services sector. The body believes work-from-home models can help India reduce operational inefficiencies and contribute to broader sustainability goals.
The demand comes at a time when many technology companies have been pushing employees back to offices after years of hybrid work adoption following the pandemic.
Industry Balances Flexibility with Business Needs
India’s IT industry employs nearly 5.8 million professionals and remains one of the country’s largest private-sector employers. While employee groups continue advocating flexibility, several firms argue that in-office collaboration is important for innovation, culture building, and productivity.
The discussion also intersects with larger industry shifts around AI adoption, cost optimisation, and evolving workforce expectations.
As companies rethink workplace strategies, the debate around hybrid and remote work is likely to remain a key issue for India’s technology ecosystem in the coming years.
