SpeakX.ai, an AI-powered English learning startup, has raised $16 million (₹142 crore) in a funding round led by WestBridge Capital, with participation from Goodwater Capital and existing investor Elevation Capital. The round also saw participation from angel investors including Shyamal Anadkat of OpenAI and Ronnie Screwvala of upGrad.
Founded in 2020 by Arpit Mittal and Anshul Gupta, SpeakX.ai began as YellowClass, a children’s learning platform that gained momentum during the pandemic. In 2023, the company pivoted to focus on AI-driven spoken English learning, targeting one of India’s largest unmet skill needs. Founder and CEO Arpit Mittal shared that the new funds will be used to enhance the company’s AI stack, expand into regional languages, and drive sustainable profitability.
SpeakX has emerged as one of the few Indian edtech startups to achieve profitability post-pandemic, with ₹5 crore in monthly revenue, ₹1.5 crore in profit, and a user base exceeding 10 million, including 200,000 active paying subscribers. The company recently crossed ₹10 crore in annual profit, underscoring the renewed investor focus on profitability and product-led growth.
The platform leverages generative AI and speech-recognition technology to simulate real-time English conversations, offering personalized feedback on pronunciation, tone, and fluency. Initially built using OpenAI’s enterprise API, SpeakX now operates on Google Gemini for faster, more responsive learning. About 80% of the new capital will go toward strengthening AI and technology, while the remainder will support regional language rollouts in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Marathi.
With plans to achieve ₹100 crore in annual EBITDA by 2026, SpeakX aims to become a $300–400 million company in the next three years, redefining India’s AI-led edtech transformation.
