Visakhapatnam | August 20, 2025 – PeelON, a biotech startup developing plant-based packaging solutions for fresh produce, has raised $1 million in a seed funding round led by growX Ventures, with participation from Boston Venture Group, Clean Energy Venture Group, and Climate Angels.
Funding Snapshot
The proceeds will be used to expand R&D and production facilities in Visakhapatnam, strengthen hiring across sales (USA and India), R&D, and compliance, and launch marketing campaigns in global markets.
Tackling Food Waste with Biotech
Co-founded in 2020 by Taraka Ramji Moturu and Venkata Ravi Sankar Ummidi, PeelON is addressing the challenge of food waste and single-use plastics in the fresh produce supply chain. Its biodegradable, compostable films extend the shelf life of fruits and vegetables by up to 3x, reducing spoilage while replacing plastic packaging.
PeelON operates on a B2B model, working with farmers, exporters, and retailers to integrate sustainable packaging at scale. Its two flagship solutions – PeelON-Fresh (liners for bulk shipments) and PeelON-Retail+ (bags with antimicrobial agents and ethylene scavengers) – address pain points from logistics to retail shelves.
Early Traction
PeelON’s solutions are already being deployed across crops such as cilantro, broccoli, leafy greens, rambutan, and banana, with adoption in Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, as well as across Texas, Florida, and California in the US. It has also built collaborations with universities and compostable materials labs in India and the USA.
Market Watch
Looking ahead, PeelON aims to scale production in India and the US, expand into Mexico and Southeast Asia, and launch retail-ready formats in US and Canadian markets. The company is also working on a blockchain-enabled traceability platform for carbon and shelf-life validation.
Final Take
By combining deep-tech innovation with sustainability goals, PeelON is positioning itself as a critical enabler in the global shift toward eco-friendly food packaging.
