Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) on Monday announced plans to establish a new vehicle manufacturing facility in Maharashtra, with production expected to begin in the first half of 2029.

The new plant will be located in the Bidkin Industrial Area in Maharashtra and forms part of Toyota’s broader strategy to strengthen its manufacturing footprint in India and surrounding export markets.

While the company did not officially disclose the investment amount, Japanese media reports have suggested that parent company Toyota Motor Corporation may invest around 300 billion yen ($1.9 billion) toward capacity expansion in India.

According to the company, the upcoming facility will have an annual production capacity of 100,000 vehicles and is expected to generate around 2,800 jobs.

Toyota also confirmed that the plant will manufacture a new SUV model and will include key production operations such as stamping, welding, painting, and assembly.

The company stated that the new facility is aimed at enabling more flexible responses to rising demand and changing market conditions in India while ensuring faster delivery of products to customers.

India has become an increasingly important market for global automakers, particularly in the SUV segment, which continues to drive passenger vehicle growth across urban and semi-urban markets.

Currently, Toyota Kirloskar Motor operates two manufacturing plants in Karnataka with a combined installed production capacity of 5.52 lakh units annually.

The expansion also reflects the growing importance of India in Toyota’s global manufacturing and export strategy as automakers ramp up investments in local production, supply chains, and next-generation mobility solutions.

Maharashtra has emerged as a major automotive and industrial manufacturing hub, attracting investments from both domestic and international automobile companies due to its infrastructure, industrial corridors, and logistics connectivity.
