Instagram Extends Original Content Rules to Photos, Carousels

Instagram has expanded its original content policy to include photos and carousel posts, extending rules that were earlier limited to reels, as the platform sharpens its focus on promoting authentic creators.

The update means that creators producing original photos, videos, and edited content reflecting their own perspective are more likely to receive greater visibility in recommendations. On the other hand, content that is reposted without meaningful changes may see reduced reach and could become ineligible for discovery among users who do not already follow the account.

Instagram clarified that creators can still use third-party material, such as memes or trending clips, provided they make “material edits” that significantly transform the content. These include adding humour, commentary, narration, creative graphics, or contextual overlays.

However, low-effort modifications such as adding borders, watermarks, speed changes, or simple captions will not qualify as original content under the updated guidelines.

The platform also introduced stricter consequences for repeated violations. Accounts that frequently post unoriginal reels, photos, or carousel content may be removed from recommendation systems for new audiences. Visibility can be restored if a creator’s recent content meets originality standards over a rolling 30-day period.

Users will be able to track their compliance through the Account Status section and can appeal decisions if they believe moderation errors have occurred.

Instagram noted that these changes will not impact how content is shown to existing followers and will not apply to publishers operating under licensing agreements or explicit permissions. The updated rules are also separate from the platform’s intellectual property policies.

The move signals Instagram’s broader push to reward originality and reduce repetitive or reposted content across formats.
