Project Commissioning and Significance
Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd (TPREL), a subsidiary of The Tata Power Company Ltd, has commissioned SJVN Ltd’s 1 gigawatt (GW) domestic content requirement (DCR) compliant solar power project in Rajasthan. The company said this is the largest solar project commissioned by TPREL so far and among the largest renewable energy projects executed in India.

Impact on Renewable Portfolio
With the commissioning of this project, TPREL’s total renewable utility-scale capacity has increased to 11.6 GW. This includes 4.9 GW delivered through third-party engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contracts, strengthening the company’s position as a major renewable energy developer and EPC player.

Domestic Manufacturing and DCR Compliance
All 2.4 million solar modules used in the project were manufactured at Tata Power’s TP Solar Ltd facility in Tirunelveli. The company said the use of domestically produced cells and modules aligns with the government’s DCR policy and supports the ‘Make in India’ initiative aimed at building local manufacturing capacity in renewable energy.

Location and Power Offtake
The project spans the Bandarwala and Karnisar Bhatiyan sites in Bikaner district, Rajasthan. Power generated from the facility will be supplied across multiple states, with 500 megawatts allocated to Rajasthan Urja Vikas and IT Services Ltd, 300 megawatts to Jammu and Kashmir Power Ltd, and 200 megawatts to Uttarakhand Power Corporation Ltd.

Generation and Environmental Benefits
In its first year of operations, the project is expected to generate around 2,454.84 million units of electricity and offset nearly 1.74 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, contributing to India’s clean energy and climate goals.

Execution Challenges and Local Impact
TPREL said the project was executed under extreme weather and terrain conditions, with temperatures ranging from 3 degrees Celsius in winter to 50 degrees Celsius in summer. More than 300 local workers were trained and employed, and over 25 local vendors were developed, supporting regional economic activity.
