Anil Ambani-led Reliance Group has announced that its subsidiary Reliance Infrastructure is setting up one of India’s most advanced, fully integrated solar manufacturing ecosystems. The facility will span the entire value chain ingots, wafers, solar cells, and module manufacturing and is designed to close a major supply gap in India’s clean energy market.
India’s Rising Solar Module Demand
According to the company’s investor presentation, India will need 5,560 GW of solar modules annually by 2030, driven by rapid adoption of utility-scale projects, rooftop deployments, and industrial clean energy mandates. Despite this surge, India’s upstream manufacturing capacity is significantly short, making the vertically integrated platform critical for reducing import dependence and strengthening domestic energy security.
Next-Generation Technology and Energy Autonomy
Reliance Infrastructure said the manufacturing platform will be built using next-generation production technologies to improve efficiency, reduce cost per watt, and create high-value solar components at scale. The initiative aligns with India’s broader ambition to establish a self-reliant renewable energy supply chain, enabling faster commissioning of projects without relying on imports.
Battery Storage Manufacturing Strategy
Beyond solar modules, the group is building a fully integrated battery manufacturing ecosystem, covering cell manufacturing, pack assembly, and grid-scale containerised BESS (battery energy storage systems). India’s installed stationary storage capacity is less than 1 GWh today, but is expected to rise to 250 GWh by 2032, with domestic manufacturers currently meeting less than 10% of projected demand, according to internal estimates.
Hybrid and Round-the-Clock Renewable Solutions
Another subsidiary, Reliance Power, highlighted that its clean energy platform Reliance NU Energies is driving a transition from traditional standalone solar systems to hybrid and round-the-clock (RTC) renewable energy, enabling more stable and firm green power for industry and the grid.
