Vedanta Ltd’s thermal power units Meenakshi Energy (MEL) and Vedanta Limited Chhattisgarh Thermal Power Plant (VLCTPP) have jointly secured a 500 MW Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) from the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation (TNPDCL). The agreement marks a major milestone for Vedanta’s growing Independent Power Producer (IPP) operations.
Under the Letters of Award (LOAs), Meenakshi Energy will supply 300 MW and VLCTPP 200 MW to Tamil Nadu for five years, from February 1, 2026, to January 31, 2031, at a tariff of ₹5.38 per kWh. Vedanta emerged as the largest beneficiary, securing 500 MW out of the 1,580 MW tendered by TNPDCL, underscoring its competitiveness and operational strength.
Expanding Leadership in India’s Thermal Power Sector
Vedanta Power, comprising MEL in Andhra Pradesh and VLCTPP in Chhattisgarh, has rapidly strengthened its position as one of India’s most dependable private power producers. Both plants were revived and made operational in record time following acquisition, according to the company.
“Reliable baseload power remains crucial for India’s energy stability,” said Rajinder Singh Ahuja, CEO – Power, Vedanta Ltd. “This PPA win reaffirms Vedanta’s leadership in efficient, dependable power generation and enhances revenue visibility as we progress toward the demerger of Vedanta Power.”
Revival Milestones and Future Outlook
Vedanta acquired Meenakshi Energy in 2023 and restored its 1,000 MW Tirupati plant to full operation within two years. Similarly, the 1,200 MW VLCTPP in Singhitarai, Chhattisgarh — formerly Athena Chhattisgarh Power Limited — commissioned its first 600 MW unit in August 2025.
Vedanta now operates 12 GW of thermal capacity, with 5 GW under merchant IPP assets across Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha. These assets form the backbone of Vedanta Power’s vision to drive India’s energy security with scalable, reliable, and efficient infrastructure.
