Adda247 has reportedly laid off more than 200 employees, representing nearly 20% of its workforce, as the Google backed edtech startup restructures operations ahead of its planned initial public offering (IPO).
According to a report by Business Standard, the layoffs were part of a broader organisational restructuring exercise aimed at improving operational efficiency and preparing the company for public market scrutiny.
The exercise reportedly affected teams across product, design, content, CUET, UPSC, judiciary preparation, and teaching functions. The layoffs were carried out at the company’s Gurugram office on April 30.
In a statement, Adda247 said it periodically reviews its organisational structure to improve execution and better serve learners. The company added that while certain structural adjustments had been made across functions, it continues to hire selectively for key positions.
The startup also stated that its overall headcount remains broadly stable and that impacted employees are being supported in accordance with company policies.
Founded by Anil Nagar and Saurabh Bansal, Adda247 operates in the online competitive exam preparation segment, offering courses and test preparation services for government exams including UPSC, SSC, banking, railways, CUET, and judiciary related exams.
The company has raised nearly $67 million to date from investors including Google, WestBridge Capital, Info Edge, and Asha Impact.
The restructuring comes as Adda247 prepares for a potential stock market listing over the next 12 to 18 months. Founder and CEO Anil Nagar had recently stated that the company reported around ₹240 crore in revenue in FY25, while losses stood at approximately ₹70 crore.
According to the report, the layoffs could help the company save nearly ₹5 crore annually in salary expenses.
The report also cited slowing growth in certain business segments, weaker traction in StudyIQ’s online business, and concerns around cash runway as factors contributing to the restructuring exercise.
This is not the first workforce reduction at the company. In October 2023, Adda247 had reportedly laid off around 250–300 employees across sales, content, and faculty verticals amid broader pressures in the edtech sector.
The development reflects the continued shift within India’s edtech industry, where startups are increasingly focusing on profitability, operational efficiency, and sustainable growth ahead of public market ambitions.
