Microsoft Appoints Asha Sharma as CEO of Gaming Division

Microsoft has appointed Indian-origin executive Asha Sharma as Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of its gaming division. She will succeed longtime Xbox head Phil Spencer, who is retiring after nearly four decades at the company. Sharma will report directly to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and lead the company’s global gaming strategy, platform expansion, and content ecosystem.

Focus on Strengthening Xbox Platform and Global Gaming Presence

Sharma said her leadership will focus on recommitting to core Xbox users, empowering game studios, and investing in iconic franchises. She emphasised expanding into new markets and categories while prioritising meaningful gaming experiences. Microsoft Gaming has been navigating tariff-driven cost pressures, strong competition, and evolving consumer spending, making platform innovation and ecosystem expansion a key strategic priority.

Strong Leadership Background Across AI, Platforms, and Consumer Tech

Before this role, Sharma led product development for Microsoft’s CoreAI division, overseeing enterprise AI infrastructure and platforms. She previously served as Chief Operating Officer at Instacart, where she helped scale operations and supported the company’s IPO. Earlier, she held leadership roles at Meta, overseeing Messenger, Instagram Direct, and communication platforms.

Sharma’s appointment reflects Microsoft’s strategy to integrate artificial intelligence, gaming, and platform innovation.
