Startup Targets $1 Bn UPI-Led Global Payment Volume Over Two Years
RBI Approval Strengthens Cross-Border Payment Infrastructure
Cross-border payment startup EximPe has received final authorisation from the Reserve Bank of India for the Payment Aggregator Cross Border (PA-CB) licence. The approval allows EximPe to enable international merchants to collect payments from Indian customers using UPI and other domestic payment methods, with settlements routed to offshore accounts.
The licence allows global merchants and payment platforms to accept payments via UPI, cards, wallets, net banking, and bank transfers without establishing a local Indian entity. The company said this framework will improve payment success rates and reduce operational friction for cross-border collections.
Transition From Banking Partner Model to Direct Aggregator
Before securing the licence, EximPe operated as a technology service provider supporting banking partners. The startup has facilitated more than $500 million in bank-led cross-border trade payments across Asian corridors. With regulatory approval, EximPe has now transitioned into operating directly as a cross-border payment aggregator under RBI’s regulatory structure.
Founded by Arjun Zacharia, EximPe currently operates across trade corridors including India–China, India–Hong Kong, India–Singapore, and India–ASEAN, focusing on compliant and UPI-driven international payment infrastructure.
Growth Plans and Competitive Payment Ecosystem
EximPe aims to process $1 billion in annualised UPI-led cross-border transactions over the next 24 months. The company has raised $3.5 million in seed funding led by Leo Capital, with participation from Beta Lab, RB Investments, and angel investors.
The RBI has recently granted payment aggregator approvals to several fintech companies including Razorpay, Paytm, Easebuzz, PayU, Pine Labs, and Airpay, allowing them to offer end-to-end payment services across ecommerce, offline, and international transactions.
