As layoffs become sudden and unforgiving in the age of AI, a new Indian startup is questioning the foundations of traditional employment. Unjob.ai was built out of a deeply personal experience. The founder grew up watching his father spend more than 20 years in a toxic job, working long hours with little freedom or family time. That reality exposed a larger issue within India’s work culture, where loyalty is often demanded without dignity or fair compensation. For Gen Z, respect, flexibility, and control over one’s career now matter more than job titles or long-term promises.
A Skills-First Alternative to Hiring
Unjob.ai challenges conventional hiring by removing resumes and interviews altogether. Instead, freelancers and skilled professionals showcase their work through content, allowing brands to hire directly based on proven skills. The platform is designed around a simple belief: proof of ability should matter more than credentials. By prioritising skills over CVs and freedom over formality, Unjob.ai aims to dismantle the long-standing “cheap labour” mindset and create a more transparent, merit-driven ecosystem for both talent and employers.
Early Traction and the Road Ahead
The platform officially launched on 15 August 2025 and saw immediate organic traction. Within seven days, Unjob.ai crossed 1,000+ users, with over 200 brands signing up as early adopters. The growth came without paid marketing, despite the company being bootstrapped and competing with billion-dollar platforms such as LinkedIn and Fiverr. The biggest challenge ahead, according to the team, is behavioural rather than technical encouraging freelancers to consistently post content and build their personal brand in public. Unjob.ai believes that changing this mindset will not only strengthen its community but also define the future of work in an AI-driven economy.
