What Swiggy Has Launched
Food and grocery delivery platform Swiggy has enabled users to order food, shop for groceries, and make dining reservations directly through popular AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Google Gemini.
The integration has been rolled out across Swiggy Food, Instamart, and Dineout using Model Context Protocol (MCP). In its current form, transactions placed through AI tools support only cash on delivery.
How MCP Changes App-to-AI Integration
MCP acts as a universal connector that standardises how AI agents interact with application programming interfaces. Instead of building custom integrations for each AI tool, Swiggy can now allow multiple agentic systems to plug directly into its backend and execute tasks end-to-end.
This means AI agents can handle complex workflows such as product discovery, cart building, offer application, address selection, order placement, and delivery tracking, all within a conversational interface.
Competitive Context in Indian Commerce
Swiggy’s move follows a similar pilot by BigBasket, which last year enabled grocery purchases directly within ChatGPT using UPI-based payments. Unlike Swiggy’s COD-only rollout, BigBasket’s pilot supported UPI Reserve Pay, allowing funds to be blocked and debited post-transaction completion.
