Reliance Consumer Products Ltd (RCPL), the fast-moving consumer goods arm of Reliance Industries, has acquired a majority stake in Udhaiyams Agro Foods for an undisclosed consideration, strengthening its push into the branded staples and fresh foods segment.

Under the joint venture structure, RCPL will hold a controlling stake, while Udhaiyams Agro Foods’ promoters S Sudhakar and S Dinakar will continue to retain a minority stake and remain involved in the company’s next phase of growth.

RCPL Deepens Presence in Staples Market

With this acquisition, RCPL enters direct competition with Tata Consumer Products in the staples category and with iD Fresh Food and Orkla-owned MTR in the idli batter segment. The move aligns with Reliance Retail’s broader strategy of scaling regional heritage brands into national FMCG players.

RCPL said the partnership reinforces its commitment to promoting India’s legacy food brands while delivering “global quality at affordable prices” to consumers across the country.

Udhaiyam’s Strong Regional Footprint

Founded over three decades ago, Udhaiyams Agro Foods operates under its flagship brand Udhaiyam, a household name in Tamil Nadu. The brand has built a strong presence across staples such as rice, pulses, spices, snacks, and idli batter, supported by an extensive distribution network across the state.

T Krishnakumar, Director at RCPL, said Udhaiyam reflects Tamil Nadu’s rich food heritage and scientific approach to quality, adding that the brand has strong potential to scale nationally under Reliance’s distribution and sourcing capabilities.

National Expansion Plans

Udhaiyams’ Managing Director S Sudhakar said the partnership opens new growth avenues for the brand beyond Tamil Nadu. With RCPL leading expansion, the company aims to take Udhaiyam’s trusted quality to consumers across India, particularly in branded pulses and ready-to-cook categories.

The acquisition marks another step in Reliance Retail’s strategy to build a pan-India FMCG portfolio anchored in trusted regional brands.
