OpenAI to Invest $25 Billion in Argentina for Massive AI Data Center Project

In a major step toward expanding its global AI infrastructure, OpenAI has signed a letter of intent with Argentina’s Sur Energy to build a large-scale data center project valued at up to $25 billion. The initiative marks one of the biggest technology and energy infrastructure projects in Argentina’s history.

According to the Argentine government, the proposed facility will have a capacity of up to 500 megawatts, supporting advanced artificial intelligence computing workloads. The project will operate under Argentina’s Régimen de Incentivo para Grandes Inversiones (RIGI) — a tax incentive scheme launched last year to attract high-value global investments.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced the initiative on social media, calling it “Stargate Argentina,” and highlighting it as the company’s first such project in Latin America. “We are proud to launch Stargate Argentina in partnership with Sur Energy — a region full of talent, creativity, and ambition,” Altman said.

The announcement follows OpenAI’s recent surge in valuation, reaching $500 billion after a secondary share sale last week, making it the world’s most valuable startup. With over 800 million weekly ChatGPT users, OpenAI continues to strengthen its global presence through strategic partnerships and large-scale infrastructure investments.

Earlier this week, at its developer conference, OpenAI unveiled a series of new collaborations with companies such as Spotify, Zillow, and Mattel, alongside upgraded tools for developers to create next-generation AI applications.

The Stargate Argentina project underscores the growing convergence of artificial intelligence and sustainable energy, positioning Argentina as a rising hub for global AI infrastructure and innovation in Latin America.
