Facebook parent Meta Platforms on Monday announced that it will acquire Chinese artificial intelligence startup Manus, as it looks to expand advanced AI agent capabilities across its platforms. The company said the acquisition will help accelerate the deployment of autonomous AI tools for both consumers and businesses.
About Manus and Its Technology
Founded in China, Manus has built a general-purpose autonomous AI agent designed to independently perform complex tasks such as market research, software coding, and data analysis. Meta said the startup’s AI agent technology will support its efforts to scale intelligent automation and productivity features for users.
Deal Size and Structure
While Meta and Manus did not disclose the financial terms of the transaction, The Wall Street Journal reported that the deal is valued at over $2 billion. Under the agreement, Manus will continue to operate as a standalone product while also being integrated into Meta’s consumer and enterprise offerings, including Meta AI.
Strategic Importance for Meta
The acquisition comes amid intensifying competition among global technology companies to secure AI talent and proprietary models. AI agents capable of operating with minimal human intervention are increasingly viewed as a key differentiator, with applications ranging from enterprise automation to advanced consumer services.
Manus Performance Claims
Earlier this year, Manus launched its AI agent and claimed that its performance exceeded OpenAI’s DeepResearch in certain benchmarks. The company said its systems have processed more than 147 trillion tokens and generated over 80 million virtual computers, serving millions of users and businesses worldwide.
Management Commentary
Manus chief executive officer Xiao Hong said joining Meta would provide a stronger and more sustainable foundation for the company without altering its operating independence or decision-making approach. He added that Manus will continue to enhance its product and support existing customers.
Integration Plans
As part of the transaction, the Manus team will join Meta to contribute to the development of general-purpose AI agents across Meta’s platforms. Meta said it plans to scale the technology to reach a broader base of business users over time.
