The Law That Changed the Game
The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025, bans all real-money online games while encouraging e-sports and casual social gaming. This move marks a significant shift in India’s digital gaming ecosystem.
Gameskraft and Dream11 Lead the Pivot
Gameskraft has opted not to legally challenge the new law, stopping all real-money ‘Gameplay’ and ‘Add Cash’ services on its Rummy platforms from August 21. The company has cleared all regulatory dues and taken measures to protect employees, partners, and service providers.
Dream11, India’s largest real-money gaming startup with reported revenue of Rs 9,600 crore in FY24, also confirmed it will comply, pivoting into wealth-tech with its new app, Dream Money. Gameskraft, which posted Rs 3,500 crore revenue and Rs 947 crore profit after tax in FY24, is exploring innovative, future-ready solutions.
Other Startups Follow Suit
Major players including My11Circle, WinZO, Zupee, Probo, Paytm First Games, and Nazara Technologies-backed PokerBaazi have suspended their real-money offerings. Some, like WinZO, are diversifying into microdrama via WinZo TV, reflecting a shift toward new digital entertainment formats.
Opportunities Ahead
The ban ends the real-money gaming era but opens doors for startups to explore e-sports, casual gaming, and digital entertainment. Adaptation, diversification, and innovation will define success in this evolving market.
