Tech giant Google is set to make one of its largest-ever direct investments in India, planning a $10 billion project to build a sprawling data centre cluster in and around Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The initiative, part of India’s first AI Infrastructure Hub, aims to strengthen the country’s digital backbone and support advanced research, AI development, and technology growth.
The project will comprise three campuses across villages including Adavivaram, Tarluvada, and Rambilli, with a combined power capacity of 1 gigawatt. Key infrastructure developments include laying three submarine cables, constructing cable landing stations, and deploying high-capacity fiber and telecom networks to ensure seamless connectivity and operational efficiency. Google plans to make the data centre cluster fully operational by July 2028.
The deal is expected to be formalized during a meeting between top Google executives and Andhra Pradesh IT and Electronics Minister Nara Lokesh in New Delhi on October 14. This follows a memorandum of understanding signed in December 2024, shortly after the state government underwent a leadership change.
To facilitate large-scale digital infrastructure projects, the Andhra Pradesh government is also exploring amendments to data-related laws and regulatory processes. The Visakhapatnam cluster will not only serve as a key operational hub for Google in India but will also play a critical role in the government’s vision of creating an AI Infrastructure Hub, concentrating cutting-edge technology resources and fostering innovation.
Currently, Google operates data centres in 11 countries, but the Visakhapatnam project represents the company’s first cluster of this scale in India. Industry experts expect it to significantly enhance India’s AI capabilities, cloud computing infrastructure, and digital economy, positioning Andhra Pradesh as a hub for next-generation technological development in the region.
