How Two Founders Built a Tech-Driven Waste Management Startup
In 2016, during their college days, Abhishek Gupta and Abhinav Shekhar Vashistha weren’t building a startup. They were solving a problem they saw around them. From organising zero-waste college festivals to developing an app that helped citizens locate public toilets and dustbins, their early experiments reflected a deeper insight. India’s waste management system was broken at the ground level.
By 2018, this insight evolved into WeVOIS Labs Pvt. Ltd., a startup built to transform how cities manage waste. What began as a student-led initiative soon became a structured mission to build a scalable, sustainable, and profitable waste management enterprise.
Solving India’s 40% Waste Collection Gap
Traditional waste collection systems in India often miss 30–40 percent of households. This gap leads to open dumping, burning of waste, and severe environmental impact. WeVOIS approached this not as a logistics issue, but as a technology problem.
The company built an IoT-enabled door-to-door smart waste collection system designed specifically for urban ecosystems. Its platform surveys areas, identifies waste generators such as homes, hospitals, hotels, and hostels, and then creates optimised collection routes.
Drivers receive these routes via a mobile app with defined timelines and speed guidance, ensuring operational efficiency and better coverage. The result is not just cleaner cities, but a system that is measurable, trackable, and scalable.
Scaling Across Cities with Impact
Over the past seven years, WeVOIS has grown into a leading player in India’s solid waste management space. The company now operates with over 350 professionals and 1900+ sanitation partners, serving more than 42 lakh citizens across 30+ cities including Jaipur, Ajmer, Hisar, Goa, Dehradun, and IIT Kharagpur.
Its impact goes beyond collection. The company recently launched Rajasthan’s first textile recycling facility, ReSutra – Threads of Change, in Jaipur, pushing forward circular waste management in India.
Recognition and the Road Ahead
WeVOIS has received multiple recognitions including Forbes 30 Under 30, CSRBOX Doing Good for Bharat Award, CNBC-TV18 Excellence Award, and Maharashtra Startup Week Winner.
But the real story isn’t awards. It’s execution.
In a country where waste is often ignored until it becomes a crisis, WeVOIS is quietly building the infrastructure to solve it at scale. And in doing so, it’s proving that impactful businesses can also be sustainable, tech-driven, and profitable.
