The Centre has released ₹17,744.19 crore as the first wage instalment under MGNREGA for FY27, ensuring continued employment generation and timely wage payments under the rural jobs scheme.
In addition to wage support, the government has issued a mother sanction of ₹3,478 crore towards material and administrative components for states and Union Territories.
Officials clarified that the recent 35.3% dip in monthly employment under MGNREGA reflects the scheme’s demand driven nature, where work demand fluctuates based on seasonal factors and local livelihood conditions. The government stated that fund allocation and labour budgets are being aligned accordingly.
For the early months of FY27, around 30 crore person days have been earmarked for April, while over 43 crore person days are planned for May, indicating a gradual ramp-up in employment generation.
The Centre has also confirmed that MGNREGA will continue to operate until the rollout of the proposed Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Aajeevika Mission (VB-GRAMIN), which is expected to replace the current scheme.
In the Union Budget FY27, the government allocated ₹95,692 crore for VB-GRAMIN and ₹30,000 crore for MGNREGA, primarily aimed at clearing pending dues and supporting work during the transition phase.
The move highlights the government’s focus on rural employment continuity and income support, even as it prepares to transition to a new employment framework.
