Massive $75 Billion Energy Transition Commitment

Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani announced that the conglomerate will invest over $75 billion in India’s energy transition over the next five years. Speaking at the 100th foundation day of IIT (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad, Adani said the country must define its own development priorities and pursue industrial growth without external pressure.

World’s Largest Renewable Energy Park in Gujarat

Adani highlighted the group’s development of the Khavda renewable energy park in Gujarat, which spans 520 sq km, making it the largest green power hub globally. By 2030, the park will deliver 30 GW of clean energy, enough to power over 60 million households annually, based on average consumption levels. The group has already commissioned the first 10 GW, positioning Adani Green Energy to deliver the world’s lowest-cost green electron.

India’s Energy Consumption Gap

Adani emphasised that India is now the third-largest electricity consumer, yet per capita electricity usage remains under 1,400 kWh, less than half the global average and significantly below consumption levels in the US, Europe and China. He argued that India’s industrialisation and energy requirements must be viewed through an equitable sustainability framework.

Countering Global Sustainability Narratives

Referring to climate debates following COP-30 in 2025, Adani said India’s sustainability ranking was downgraded because it does not have a coal-exit timeline and continues to auction coal blocks. However, he stressed the need to consider per capita emissions, a metric where India remains among the world’s lowest. India emits under 2 tonnes of CO2 per person, compared to 14 tonnes in the US, 9 tonnes in China and 6 tonnes in Europe.

India’s Historic Emission Contribution

Adani added that in 200 years of industrial activity, India has contributed just 4% of cumulative global emissions, versus 13% from Europe, 19% from the US and 20% from China, underscoring India’s right to develop without unfair climate expectations.
