Indian Railways has crossed a major technological milestone after the Vande Bharat Sleeper train successfully completed its final high speed trial at 180 kmph, reinforcing India’s push towards indigenous, next-generation rail manufacturing.
The high-speed trial was conducted on the Kota–Nagda section under the supervision of the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS). According to officials, the 16-coach sleeper train achieved the targeted speed smoothly, with all safety and performance parameters found to be fully satisfactory.
“The train’s performance at 180 kmph was stable and compliant with safety norms. The trial has been declared successful by the CRS,” the Ministry of Railways said in an official note.
Designed for Long-Distance Travel
Unlike the existing Vande Bharat chair car variants, the Vande Bharat Sleeper is specifically designed for long-haul overnight journeys, offering a modern alternative to conventional Rajdhani and Duronto services.
The train is equipped with ergonomically designed sleeper berths, advanced suspension systems for smoother rides at high speeds, automatic sliding doors, modern vacuum-based toilets, and an integrated fire detection and suppression system to enhance passenger safety.
Officials said the train also features improved noise insulation, real time monitoring systems, and passenger friendly interiors aimed at raising comfort standards on long distance routes.
Boost to ‘Make in India’ Rail Tech
The successful trial marks a significant step in Indian Railways’ Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, as the sleeper version has been fully designed and manufactured domestically.
While the railways did not announce a definitive launch date, officials indicated that the train has moved closer to induction into commercial service following the CRS clearance. The Vande Bharat Sleeper project had earlier missed multiple rollout timelines due to design refinements and testing requirements.
Once introduced, the Vande Bharat Sleeper is expected to redefine premium overnight rail travel in India, combining high speed, enhanced safety and modern passenger comfort.
