Indian data-centre operator CtrlS Datacenters has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with NTPC Green Energy Ltd (NGEL) to jointly develop grid-connected renewable energy projects with a combined capacity of up to 2 gigawatts (GW) or more. The agreement was formalised by CtrlS Founder & CEO Sridhar Pinnapureddy and NGEL CEO Sarit Maheshwari.
Scope of the Partnership
Under the terms of the MoU, the two companies will collaborate on green-field development and potential acquisitions of renewable-energy assets for captive power supply to CtrlS. This arrangement will help fuel CtrlS’s data-centres and support other mutually agreed business ventures. The agreement is valid for an initial two-year period, with provisions for further extension.
Sustainability Meets Digital Infrastructure
NGEL, a subsidiary of NTPC Ltd, currently operates over 8.9 GW of renewable capacity, with another 13 GW under implementation. The company aims to reach 60 GW by 2032. “Partnering with NGEL enables us to power our data-centres with renewable energy, enhance efficiency, and advance our commitment to net-zero operations,” said Pinnapureddy. “We’re demonstrating that innovation and sustainability must go hand in hand.”
CtrlS’s Renewable Ambitions
Founded in 2007, CtrlS operates 16 data-centres across nine key markets in India and is actively expanding into the Middle East and Southeast Asia. The move aligns with its broader strategy to integrate renewable energy into its operations and support India’s larger goal of decarbonising digital infrastructure.
Broader Industry Impact
With expanding digital consumption and cloud workloads, data-centre power demand is growing rapidly. This partnership highlights how renewable-energy firms and digital-infrastructure providers are forging new models for clean, scalable growth in India’s tech ecosystem.
