Online Gaming Bill Forces Dream11, MPL, Zupee to Exit RMG

Fantasy sports giant Dream11, one of India’s largest gaming startups, has announced the discontinuation of its core real-money gaming business. The decision marks a significant setback as RMG had been the platform’s primary revenue driver.

The ripple effect has spread quickly. My11Circle (Games24x7), MPL, Zupee, Gameskraft’s RummyCulture, and Probo have all shut down their money-based verticals. While MPL will continue focusing on international markets, which contribute nearly 50% of its revenues, domestic real-money operations have been discontinued. Similarly, Zupee and Probo confirmed they would continue offering free-to-play formats while exiting money-linked games.

Spokespersons from MPL and Probo underlined their compliance with the government’s stance, highlighting their intent to continue innovating within non-money-based gaming. Gameskraft, meanwhile, has closed down its flagship rummy platform, RummyCulture, after the Bill cleared both Houses of Parliament.

The Bill introduces sweeping restrictions on money-based online games, carrying provisions for strict penalties and imprisonment for non-compliance. The measure aims to address concerns around financial risks, gambling addiction, and regulatory gaps in India’s fast-expanding gaming industry.

This legislative move is being seen as a watershed moment for India’s gaming ecosystem, which had attracted billions in funding over the past five years. The immediate closures raise questions about the future viability of fantasy sports and RMG ventures, even as companies pivot to free-to-play and global markets.

The Online Gaming Bill signals a decisive shift in India’s digital entertainment landscape. Startups in this space must now reimagine their models to survive in a non-money-driven ecosystem.
