Starbucks Plans First India Corporate Tech Office Amid Cost Cuts

Starbucks is planning to open its first corporate office in India focused on technology operations, as the global coffee giant accelerates efforts to streamline operations and reduce costs.

According to an internal message seen by Bloomberg, the new technology hub is expected to launch in the company’s fiscal year 2027, which begins in October 2026. Starbucks is currently evaluating locations in India and plans to begin hiring once the site is finalized later this year.

The India office will play a key role in Starbucks’ broader strategy to bring technology functions back in-house. The company had previously outsourced several tech operations to third-party vendors during earlier restructuring phases.

Starbucks Chief Technology Officer Anand Varadarajan said the company is now focused on reducing dependence on external service providers and building stronger internal technology capabilities.

The company currently works with technology vendors across multiple countries, including India. By creating a dedicated in-house technology hub, Starbucks aims to improve operational efficiency, reduce outsourcing costs, and strengthen collaboration between teams.

The move comes as Starbucks pushes ahead with a wider cost cutting plan targeting nearly $2 billion in savings. As part of this restructuring, the company recently shifted around 270 technology roles to a new office in Nashville and also carried out layoffs across certain tech functions.

Overall, Starbucks has cut more than 2,000 jobs since February last year, including 300 layoffs announced this week.

India has increasingly emerged as a strategic technology and operations hub for global enterprises due to its deep engineering talent pool and cost advantages. Starbucks’ decision reflects a growing trend among multinational corporations looking to establish captive technology centers in the country.
