L&T Chairman’s 90-Hour Workweek Comments Spark Debate on Productivity vs. Mental Health.

The debate over work-life balance just got hotter! L&T Chairman SN Subrahmanyan recently made headlines with his controversial statement urging employees to work up to 90 hours a week, including Sundays, to stay competitive in today’s fast paced world.

His comments, shared in a video address to employees, have sparked outrage on social media.

Many people are questioning whether it’s necessary to work that much, and if it even makes sense to compare such work ethics to those of leaders like Infosys founder Narayana Murthy.

While Subrahmanyan’s remarks were criticized, some industry voices, like that of Ankit Chaudhary, CEO of a Noida based company Og Media 360 are offering a more balanced perspective on Instagram.

Ankit shared his personal experience, saying he has been working 12-16 hours a day for the last five years. 

Despite the long hours, he feels he is learning to become more productive and efficient with each passing day. According to him, true success is not about putting in endless hours but about creating a system where your team helps drive the company forward even when you’re not working around the clock.

While Ankit supports the idea of working hard and pushing for success, he also stresses the importance of taking breaks for mental health. He believes that maintaining energy levels and consistency throughout the day is key to long-term success.

Social media users, however, aren’t convinced. Many have pointed out that if companies want employees to work like this, they should consider paying on an hourly basis, as done in the US or China.

The call for better work-life balance is louder than ever, and people are beginning to compare not only work ethics but salaries too.

In the end, it’s clear that the debate is far from over. As more CEOs and leaders share their opinions, it will be interesting to see how companies adjust their expectations and embrace healthier work practices in the
