Megha Sarayan: From ₹5,000 and a Home Kitchen to a ₹20 Crore Brand

0

Megha Sarayan, a 26-year-old entrepreneur from Kolkata, never imagined she’d end up building one of the city’s most loved bakery brands. Raised in a middle-class family where business was never part of the plan, Megha’s journey began unexpectedly after she attended a bakery workshop in 2018. Inspired, she started baking from home, and her cakes were an instant hit.

With just ₹5,000 in hand, she listed her creations on Zomato under the name Land of Cakes. What began as a small home bakery quickly gained momentum—especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, when demand for online orders soared. Megha scaled the business to multiple cloud kitchens in Kolkata, and more recently, expanded to Hyderabad.

At a crucial turning point, Megha was accepted into IIM Kozhikode. But instead of choosing the conventional MBA route, she took the bold decision to follow her passion full-time—turning down IIM to grow her dream. Today, her venture is valued at over ₹20 crore.

Her entrepreneurial spirit doesn’t stop at baking. Megha also runs On D’ Go, a brand built for hustle culture that caters to busy urban lifestyles. She is deeply community-focused—hosting meet-and-greets for networking, mentoring young entrepreneurs just starting out, and organizing dining experiences for the underprivileged through her initiative Flavour Notes Kolkata.

“The exclusive partnership with Zomato was truly a turning point. I hired a bunch of employees, automated operations, and delegated tasks. This allowed me to balance my studies and business,” Megha shares with Startupbydoc.

By the end of the first year, her revenue had touched ₹3 lakh, and she had served over 500 customers.

Megha’s story is proof that you don’t need a big budget or a business background to succeed—just vision, heart, and the courage to take the leap.

Land of Cakes: A Slice of Passion, Baked Into a Brand

Land of Cakes began in 2018, not with a grand business plan, but with a simple cake baked at home. What started as a passion project quickly turned into a buzzing cloud kitchen brand that redefined celebrations in Kolkata.

It all began with a single listing on Zomato—one cake, made in a home kitchen, delivered with heart. Word spread fast. From birthday surprises to midnight cravings, Land of Cakes became known for quality, reliability, and a personal touch. Despite limited resources, the brand scaled through pure grit, one order at a time.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, while many businesses struggled, Land of Cakes adapted and thrived. With online demand booming, the team expanded operations, upgraded kitchens, and streamlined delivery. The business grew exponentially, earning trust across the city and beyond.

Today, Land of Cakes has served over 6 lakh happy customers and operates multiple outlets in Kolkata and Hyderabad. The menu has grown from classic celebration cakes to over 100+ products—cheesecakes, brownies, cookies, savouries, and frozen treats—all 100% eggless and handcrafted with care.

Built on emotion, taste, and consistency, Land of Cakes isn’t just a bakery anymore. It’s a symbol of turning dreams into reality, one bite at a time.
