L&T Wins Indian Army Order to Upgrade Pinaka Rocket Systems

Engineering major Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured a supply order from the Indian Army’s Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME) for the overhaul, upgrade, and long term maintenance of the indigenous Pinaka Multi-Rocket Launcher Systems.

The programme is aimed at supporting frontline artillery platforms currently deployed with the Army, focusing on modernisation and lifecycle-based maintenance. While the financial value of the order was not disclosed, the scope includes replacement of ageing components, upgrades to key sub-systems, and sustained technical support to ensure long-term operational readiness.

Under the arrangement, the 510 Army Base Workshop (ABW) of the Corps of EME will execute the overhaul and upgrade of critical electronic systems, leveraging its in-house technical capabilities. L&T, as the original equipment manufacturer, will supply essential spares and provide engineering support for the modernisation of core sub-systems. The initiative shifts maintenance from routine repairs to a structured, lifecycle driven support model.

In the initial phase, L&T and 510 ABW will jointly conduct a pilot overhaul of one Pinaka launcher and a Battery Command Post. Following successful completion, the remaining systems will be upgraded by the Army workshop with continued technical backing from L&T.

Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Pinaka system is India’s indigenous multi-barrel rocket launcher designed for rapid, high-volume fire against area targets. Advanced variants offer extended ranges of up to 120 km and enhanced precision through guided munitions.

The partnership reinforces the public private collaboration model in defence maintenance and is expected to serve as a template for similar upgrade and lifecycle management programmes across other Indian defence platforms. L&T said the initiative marks a significant step in strengthening product lifecycle support for Made-in-India artillery systems and deepening cooperation between the Army and domestic industry.
