India is aiming to manufacture advanced 3 nanometre (nm) semiconductor chips by 2032 as part of its long-term strategy to become a globally competitive player in the semiconductor ecosystem, Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said.
In an email interview, Vaishnaw said the global semiconductor industry is witnessing rapid expansion, driven by rising demand from artificial intelligence (AI), electric vehicles, consumer electronics and smartphones. Against this backdrop, India has made a “strong start” by approving 10 semiconductor manufacturing units across the country.
According to the minister, four semiconductor plants CG Semi, Kaynes Technology, Micron Technology, and Tata Electronics’ facility in Assam are expected to begin commercial production in 2026. These projects mark India’s entry into large-scale semiconductor manufacturing and are expected to create a foundation for more advanced fabrication capabilities over the next decade.
Vaishnaw noted that India’s roadmap is focused on building end-to-end capabilities, ranging from chip manufacturing and packaging to design and advanced computing infrastructure. The push is being supported by government incentives, policy reforms, and large-scale public investment.
He added that the IndiaAI Mission will play a critical role in accelerating demand for high performance chips and strengthening the domestic semiconductor ecosystem. The mission is expected to drive investments in AI infrastructure, data centres and next-generation computing, creating sustained demand for advanced semiconductors.
By steadily scaling capacity and moving up the technology curve, the government believes India can achieve global competitiveness in chip manufacturing by the early 2030s. The planned transition to 3nm chips reflects India’s ambition to not just meet domestic demand, but also emerge as a significant node in the global semiconductor supply chain.
