Global express transportation major FedEx has announced an investment of over ₹2,500 crore to establish a fully automated cargo hub at the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), reinforcing India’s position in global trade and logistics.

The 300,000 sq ft facility will be developed in partnership with Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL) and is designed to function as a regional consolidation and redistribution hub. The project is expected to significantly enhance western India’s role as an international logistics gateway.

Strategic Logistics Boost for Western India

The new cargo hub will leverage NMIA’s multimodal connectivity, including proximity to Jawaharlal Nehru Port, industrial corridors, and integrated transport networks. This strategic location strengthens India’s largest international trade corridor and supports faster, more reliable export-import operations.

Once operational, the facility is expected to generate more than 6,000 direct and indirect jobs across logistics, warehousing, transportation, and allied sectors, providing a strong economic boost to Maharashtra.

According to the company, the hub will be equipped with advanced automated sorting systems, dimensional scanning, high-speed screening technology, and dedicated aircraft parking bays. These features will enable simultaneous processing of inbound and outbound shipments, improving routing flexibility and reducing transit time.

Focus on High-Value Sectors and MSMEs

The facility is expected to benefit high value and time sensitive industries such as electronics, pharmaceuticals, engineering goods, and perishables. By embedding global network connectivity directly into India’s primary trade corridor, the hub aims to support trade flows across Southeast Asia, West Asia, Europe, and the United States.

Improved reliability and speed are also expected to strengthen export capabilities for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), contributing to lower logistics costs and faster turnaround times.

NMIA’s Long-Term Cargo Vision

Navi Mumbai International Airport plans to commence cargo operations with an initial annual handling capacity of around 0.5 million metric tonnes (MMT). This capacity will be scaled up in phases to approximately 3.25 MMT in the final development stage.

The investment aligns with NMIA’s long-term strategy of positioning the Mumbai Metropolitan Region as one of India’s most advanced air freight and logistics hubs. With large scale infrastructure integration and automation, the FedEx cargo hub is expected to play a critical role in enhancing India’s global trade competitiveness and logistics efficiency.
