As a writer, I’ve had the privilege of documenting many journeys — but some stories stay with you long after the words are written. Spandana’s story is one of them. A story of courage, clarity, and quiet determination. A story that many young Indians dreaming of studying abroad will deeply connect with.

The Beginning of a Dream
Spandana comes from a solid finance background in India. After working at Wells Fargo, she chose to step out of her comfort zone and pursue a Master’s in Management at NEOMA Business School in France. Like many students who aim to study abroad, her journey was filled with dreams — but also challenges she never anticipated.

She didn’t just change countries. She changed perspectives. And that made all the difference.

Language Isn’t Just a Skill — It’s a Survival Tool
One of the first realities Spandana faced was the language barrier. “I knew French was important,” she told me, “but I didn’t realize how essential it was to day-to-day life.”

From grocery shopping to internship interviews, French was everywhere. Despite having good English communication skills, she often found herself left out or overlooked simply because she wasn’t fluent in the local language.

But rather than let this discourage her, she saw it as an opportunity to grow. She began learning French seriously and now advises every aspiring student: “Start with A1 and A2 levels before arriving. It gives you a huge edge — professionally and personally.”

Education Abroad: A Whole New Playing Field
Back in India, the education system was more exam-focused and theoretical. But in France, things were different.

Spandana was introduced to a dynamic and engaging academic environment — one that valued open discussions, team collaborations, and business simulations. The transition wasn’t easy. She had to unlearn old methods and adapt to fast-paced group projects and practical applications of theory.

It was uncomfortable at first. But eventually, it helped her become more confident, analytical, and clear in her communication.

Living Alone Teaches More Than Any Classroom Can
Academics aside, life abroad taught her lessons no textbook ever could.

Spandana had to manage her own budget, cook her own meals, do her laundry, and even handle complex administrative tasks like opening a bank account or applying for social security. “It felt overwhelming,” she shared, “but it also made me feel more responsible.”

Her advice to new students? “Complete your administrative work as early as possible. It affects everything — from getting a SIM card to applying for internships.”

Growth, Grit, and Gratitude
Today, Spandana feels more self-aware and mature — both as a student and as a person. She’s explored new cultures, formed deep connections with international peers, and learned how to handle difficult situations independently.

What stayed constant throughout was her belief system. “I believe in hard work, staying ethical, and manifesting your goals. And I remind myself that challenges are just part of the process,” she said with quiet confidence.

Final Thoughts
Writing Spandana’s journey made me reflect on how powerful and transformative the study-abroad experience can be. It’s not just about academics or a foreign degree. It’s about becoming a stronger, more adaptable, and more self-aware version of yourself.

To every student in India dreaming of a global life — this story is for you.

Hold on to your dreams. Prepare with intent. And remember — the world is waiting for you.
