Unacademy co-founder and Test Prep business CEO Sumit Jain is stepping down from his full-time operating role at the company, with June 30 set to be his final day in an executive capacity.

The development was announced by Unacademy CEO Gaurav Munjal through an internal email sent to employees. Jain will continue to remain associated with the company in an advisory role.

According to the internal communication reviewed by Entrackr, Munjal credited Jain with building some of Unacademy Group’s key businesses, including creator platform Graphy and the company’s offline coaching vertical.

Munjal noted that Jain played a significant role in scaling Graphy following the acquisition of Spayee and later helped improve profitability in the offline business through stronger unit economics and franchise-led expansion.

Jain joined Unacademy in 2020 after the company acquired his startup Opentalk. Before that, he had co-founded real estate platform CommonFloor.

Interestingly, CommonFloor had acquired Gaurav Munjal’s first startup Flatchat in 2016.

Over the years, Jain led Graphy, Unacademy’s SaaS platform for educators and creators, before being elevated as CEO of the company’s flagship Test Prep business in September 2025.

At the time, Unacademy had said Jain was leading initiatives around financial discipline, operational efficiency, and product experience improvements within the test preparation vertical.

The exit comes at a critical time for Unacademy as the company moves toward its acquisition by upGrad.

Earlier this year, upGrad signed a term sheet to acquire Unacademy in an all-stock transaction reportedly valued at around ₹2,055 crore (approximately $218 million).

The deal marks another major consolidation move in India’s edtech sector, which has witnessed funding slowdowns, cost restructuring, and increasing focus on profitability over the past two years.
