Amazon to Invest $5 Billion More in Anthropic Under $100 Billion AI Cloud Deal

Amazon.com Inc. will invest an additional $5 billion in AI startup Anthropic, with the potential to scale investments up to $20 billion, as part of a broader $100 billion cloud and infrastructure partnership.

Anthropic, the company behind the Claude AI chatbot, plans to spend over $100 billion over the next decade on Amazon’s cloud technologies, including its Trainium AI chips and infrastructure through Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The move deepens ties between the two firms as competition intensifies in the global AI race. Amazon had already invested $8 billion in Anthropic prior to this round.

For Amazon, the partnership strengthens AWS by securing a major AI customer and showcasing its in-house chip capabilities. For Anthropic, it ensures access to massive computing power and enterprise distribution, with over 100,000 customers already running Claude models on AWS.

Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees, Anthropic is widely expected to go public (IPO) soon. The company recently raised $30 billion, valuing it at $380 billion, and has reportedly attracted investor interest at valuations exceeding $800 billion.

Anthropic is aggressively securing compute capacity to train next generation AI models. It recently partnered with Broadcom and Google to access additional chip infrastructure, alongside its AWS commitments.

Under the latest deal, Amazon will provide up to 5 gigawatts of computing power, covering both general purpose and AI-specific workloads.

Despite the deepening partnership, Amazon remains a minority investor and does not hold a board seat in Anthropic. Future investments are tied to commercial milestones.

The agreement highlights the escalating demand for AI infrastructure, chips, and cloud capacity, as companies race to build and scale advanced AI systems.
